The Oak
lightning strikes
an aging, mighty oak.
split in half,
her meaty core
reveals itself to the night sky.
Still she lives,
twisting around herself
as if to hide
her naked body from her peers.
rain and termites soon
take their fill, eating from
her exposed belly
til only hollow armor remains
to oversee the forest.
Each year the shell of a giant
holds out against snow and rain,
with hope, perhaps
that it's
soul will return.
