A Look Back with Director Benjamin Karl:
"[chuckles] Everytime I look at someone watching 'If I can Call you Bonnie...' I just wish they understood why Scott and I made it. They always have that look that says "hey, this is really funny, but... huh?" You see '... Bonnie' was actually made as a going away gift for my cousin. We'd all had a blast while she was in town and we were going to miss her, so we decided to do something she'd never forget.
"We used Paul Simon's song 'Call Me Al' and dubbed in different names where ever Paul would use one. It worked out pretty funny because the music totally stops and you hear mine or Scott's voice for just a second. At one point it actually sounds like Scott says '...call me God.' Everybody catches it and we always laugh.
"Scott and I shot most of it ourselves with some help from Joe (Cwik). We picked locations and themes that mostly related to inside jokes between ourselves and my cousin so its not always immediately clear whats going on. If you pay attention though, you can still catch a number of very funny references that a lot of people can identify with. One of my personal favorites is a reference to sitting around in a diner for eight hours, drinking coffee. In real life the management actually tried to kick us out after about six, but we fought until we got a couple more.
"One of the greatest parts of making this was all the locations. Some shots were done inside and on top of the abandoned train station in downtown Detroit. Those were very exciting and we got some amazing shots of the bridge and the cityscape. We even took the camera on a carnival ride for a particular scene. I think the man operating the ride misunderstood when I asked if it was cool (okay) to take the camera on. He said he didn't know, but when we got off he asked us if it was cool."
