A Look Back with Director Benjamin Karl:
" 'Scarlett...' proved to be one of the most difficult projects for me personally. I've always loved Chris Deburg's 'The Lady in Red' but initially I hadn't even seen 'Gone with the Wind.' A friend came to me and asked me, as a personal favor, to put the two together as I had done many times with other films and songs. At first, all I knew about 'Gone with the Wind' was that Scarlett had that famous red dress, so I said "sure!" I watched the movie... and hated it!
"Most of what I hated was Scarlett's character, but I couldn't believe what I'd gotten myself into. I proceeded to watch the movie about twenty more times while leaving the song on repeat in the background. Then, as if it wasn't bad enough that I disliked the movie I found it nearly impossible to match the song with anything in the movie. The song is about a man and woman in love with each other. Its about how beautiful and wonderful he thinks she is. In the song, the woman is an angel. Scarlett is a bi- ... Well, she's not an angel! And Rhet, though rather likable is still a scoundrel.
"I pushed forward and attacked the project anyway. I could get past my dislike for Scarlett but the matching was tricky. Their daughter, Bonnie, was a tremendous help actually, because she's all that Rhet and Scarlett really both love. The end product blew even me away. I still get choked up everytime I watch it. Whether you're a fan of 'Gone with the Wind' or not, this is a love story, tear jerking, feel-good music video with some fancy effects helping the mood here and there. If you are a "Gone with the Wind" fan ... bring some tissue."
